Key speeches from leaders of the Australian and US central banks will be watched closely this week, though local investor sentiment has shifted to a somewhat cautious tone amid upcoming political uncertainty and volatility in US tech shares.

The ASX looks set for a subdued start to the week following renewed weakness in US markets on Friday evening. At the heart of a shift in sentiment has been persistent volatility in tech stocks, with the likes of Amazon and Apple now off their recent highs by more than 15% and 20% respectively. Central bank commentary will be in review this week, however, offshore trading activity is likely to continue shaping local investor confidence.

Economic calendar and news

The Australian economic calendar is light on news this week, headlined by the September interim reading into manufacturing and services activity across the country. There will also be job vacancy numbers and consumer confidence data, as well as preliminary ABS figures on weekly payroll jobs and retail sales for August.Elsewhere, the Reserve Bank of Australia Deputy Governor Guy Debelle will speak on the state of the Australian economy Tuesday morning. Analysts will be parsing the commentary for clues on whether the central bank might cut rates to 0.1% when it meets on the same day the federal government hands down its budget, October 6th.In the US, the latest home sales data will be published, in addition to manufacturing and services PMI data. However, the testimony of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will be front and centre. He will join Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in giving testimony before US Congress about stimulus aid and other matters related to the US economy.

A host of shares enter trading this week at their all-time highs, including gold explorers Ramelius Resources (ASX: RMS) and West African Resources (ASX: WAF), e-commerce businesses Temple & Webster Group (ASX: TPW) and Redbubble (ASX: RBL), plus the likes of Sealink Travel Group (ASX: SLK) and Lifestyle Communities (ASX: LIC).Faring less favourably, Insurance Australia Group (ASX: IAG) reached a new 52-week low, while Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (ASX: URW) slumped to an all-time low.In terms of dividend shares, Adbri (ASX: ABC) is trading ex-dividend today, followed by Carsales (ASX: CAR) tomorrow, and then EBOS Group (ASX: EBO) and Regis Resources (ASX: RRL) throughout the remainder of the week.At the smaller end of the market, there may be some volatility among lithium shares and associated battery minerals stocks in the wake of Tesla Battery Day event set for September 22nd (US time).
